Underneath these hills the limestone runs hollow — water has been working through it long enough to open the caverns that hold the Lost Sea just outside town. Above ground, winter in Sweetwater deals mostly in ice: one night of freezing rain and the ridge roads turn hard and shining before the first alarm clock goes off in town. Cave Creek Land Management takes that side of the season, plowing drives and lots, clearing walks, and salting the slick spots on the north side of a building where the sun never reaches. Getting a steep gravel drive open before the first car needs it is the whole point, tires finding gravel instead of ice.
