North of Lawrenceburg the road climbs toward Ethridge, where buggy wheels leave thin twin tracks in the shoulder gravel and the fields run right up to the mailboxes. G&S keeps yards along those roads in trim — mowing on a rhythm, edging the drives back to a visible line, cutting in what the mower cannot reach, hauling off the leaves when the oaks let go in November. There is a particular pleasure in a lawn cut across the slope of a Highland Rim hill, the stripes bending with the ground. Winter brings its own list: snow pushed off the drive, walks shoveled down to concrete, and salt where a boot might slide. Same crew, same trucks, whatever the month is doing.
