About Sgt. Carter's Mowing

Six in the morning, tailgate down, dew still heavy on everything, and Sgt. Carter's Mowing is already laying the first line across a Lafayette lawn. Straight passes, matched overlap, the deck turned at the same place every round, because a lawn cut in order looks different than one cut at random and anybody can tell from the street. The trimmer follows the mower, the blower follows the trimmer, and the yard is left with nothing on the walks. Macon County heat builds fast in July, which is exactly why the day starts before it. By the time most of town is stirring, two or three yards are done and the light is still soft on them.
