At three in the morning the lots along Papermill and Bearden sit empty and orange under the tall lights, and the snow is still coming sideways. NT Grounds Maintenance runs those hours, plowing the drive aisles first, stacking piles where they will not swallow parking spaces, then working the sidewalks and door approaches by hand. De-icer goes down where boots will actually land, and the route comes back through as the storm keeps adding to it. By the time the first cars turn in off the highway, the asphalt is dark and open and the doors are walkable. Nobody notices that work, which is exactly the measure of it.
