April on the Norris Freeway north of Halls is redbud first, then dogwood, then everything at once. That rush sets the shape of the season — beds edged and mulched, shrubs pruned before they leaf out, the first cuts taken while the ground is still soft from March rain. From there it becomes a weekly cadence of mowing, edging and trimming through a Tennessee summer that does not let up until late. Fertilization, weed control and fall overseeding keep the fescue honest through the heat and the dry stretch that usually lands in August. The pleasure of it is standing back at the road afterward and seeing one unmistakable line where lawn meets mulch.
