Kingsport has always run on shift change. Long before daylight the headlights string out along Wilcox Drive toward the Eastman stacks, and every lot and dock apron on that route has to be passable when the shift arrives. American Steel and Concrete takes the snow work seriously for exactly that reason — plowing wide, stacking the piles where they won't blind a turn, scraping the walkways down before boots ever touch them. It is unglamorous work done in the coldest hours of the year, and it is why a whole morning goes off without anyone giving the weather a thought. That is the compliment: nobody noticed.
