Snow in the Watauga valley usually begins after dark, quiet and sideways, with Iron Mountain lost somewhere behind it. The Tree Trimmer works those hours for snow removal — plowing driveways and lots while the storm is still falling, shoveling walks, steps and entry pads, putting salt down so the refreeze near dawn has nothing to grab. Clearing during a storm instead of after it means far less to lift and almost nothing to chip loose later. By the time headlights start moving on the main roads, every property on the route is open, banked back and safe to walk. It is unglamorous work, and it is the reason nobody's morning falls apart.
