The Tweetsie Trail runs the old railroad grade east out of Johnson City toward Elizabethton, and after a night of snow it is the first clean white line anybody sees. Poor Boy Lawncare & Landscaping is out well before that, when the thermometer sits in the teens and the valley is quiet enough to hear a plow blade two streets over. The work is snow, start to finish: driveways opened end to end, lots cleared and the piles stacked where they will not block a sightline, walks and steps shoveled down to bare concrete, salt spread wherever ice likes to set up. Northeast Tennessee does not get snow every week, which is precisely why the storms that do come have to be answered fast. By the time the sun clears the ridge, the drives are dark and drying and the day can start on time.
