Out toward Coalfield and Oakdale the driveways run long, gravel and uphill, curling back through trees before a house ever comes into view. JUNEBUGS DIRTWORK clears those in winter around Harriman, dropping a blade at the road and pushing the whole length open so nobody is stranded at the top. Sand and salt go where the pitch is meanest, and turnarounds get widened enough for a truck to swing. Storms come in fast and slick and usually overnight, so the phone matters about as much as the machine. There's a particular quiet after the last pass — gravel showing again, tracks headed back down the hill.
