Come October the plateau around Gruetli-Laager turns loose all at once — hickory yellow, sourwood red, the gulfs below filling with fog that burns off by mid-morning. cumberland colors works right through it, mowing while the grass still wants to grow and then clearing leaf after leaf off lawns that would otherwise go the winter smothered. In summer the pattern is calmer: cut, trim, edge, tidy the clippings, move on. Yards here are cut out of woods and share their borders with them, so the line between kept and wild has to be drawn on purpose. Drawing it well is the pleasure of the trade.
