The ridges east of Gallatin, out where the roads climb toward Bethpage and Westmoreland, keep two very different calendars. April to October it is mowing, trimming and edging, the grass driven hard by Tennessee rain and heat and held in line week by week. Then the year turns and those same drives need a plow, the walks need a shovel, and the shaded curves need salt before an afternoon melt refreezes overnight. Working both ends of the calendar means knowing a property in every mood it has. Whether the ground underfoot is growing or frozen, the intent doesn't change — leave it clear, leave it even, leave it ready.
