Stewart County is mostly ridge, hollow and hardwood — old iron-furnace country where the roads bend around the hills instead of arguing with them. Jarman Logging plows the long gravel drives and back lanes out there in winter, the ones that run a quarter mile through oak timber before they reach a house. Walkways and steps are hand-cleared, and sand or ice melt goes down on the shaded grades that never see enough sun to help themselves. Getting a place opened all the way out to the county road is the job, not just the first hundred feet. Snow doesn't stay long in this part of Tennessee, but while it's here the hills make it count.
