January cuts deep in the gorges where Daddy's Creek runs, ice fringing the sandstone ledges and the water going black and slow between them. Earth to Iron works up above all that, through the cold snaps Crossville gets when the wind crosses the open tableland with nothing to break it: plowing driveways, opening lots, shoveling walks, salting steps. Metal and morning cold are an honest pairing, the truck warming up, the blade coming down, the day starting in the dark. Behind it there is a clear black lane where an hour before there was drift. That is the entire point of the work, and it does not get old.
