North of Clarksville the land runs flat and open toward the Kentucky line, and when a January wind comes across it there is nothing out there to slow the cold down. An overnight glaze is quieter than snow and twice as dangerous; it takes a scraper, a bag of salt, and somebody willing to be up at four. Lots get cleared with the piles pushed where the melt will not run back across the drive. When the sun finally comes up over the fields, the pavement is already clear.
