The Southside's brick warehouses hold cold the way brick does, and on an icy Chattanooga morning their lots are the last thing anyone thinks about — until five o'clock, when the first cars turn in off Main Street. Prime property is out ahead of them, plow blade down across the parking rows, walkways shoveled to the doors, de-icer laid where the pavement pitches toward the curb. Snow is rare enough here that it stops the city cold when it arrives, which is precisely the argument for having a lot already spoken for. Entrances stay open, aprons stay passable, and a business that expected to lose a day simply doesn't. On storm nights the route runs until it is finished.
