Dowdy’s Excavating

About Dowdy’s Excavating

Byrdstown is the seat of Pickett County, a small town close to the Kentucky line, and on a snowy morning its courthouse square can sit untouched and blue in the half-light. Dowdy’s Excavating works snow removal here, and the hours that count are the early ones, before the first pickup tries the hill. Driveways are plowed back to their edges, entrances are opened for the day, and heaped snow is stacked clear of the sightlines where a drive meets the road. Reading grade and drainage comes naturally to an excavating hand, the way other people read a map. By the time the sun clears the treeline, town has a way out again.
