Fog sits low over the Hatchie on a cold morning, and when the temperature falls through it every surface in Bolivar picks up a slick, invisible glaze. Tennessee Land Services gets out ahead of that — plowing lots and drives, scraping down to the pavement, spreading salt across the walks and entryways where people put a foot first. Business drives and church lots are opened before the doors are, and home driveways get cleared all the way to the road so nobody shovels their way to work. Snow does not visit often here, but when it does it settles into the shade and stays for days, and the north side of a building becomes its own small winter. Working this ground is the year-round trade, and pushing snow off it in January is that same trade in a colder key. There is something plainly good about handing a town back its morning.
