West of Atoka the land steps down off the loess bluffs toward the Mississippi, and the wind that crosses it in January has nothing at all to slow it down. Big River Land Management handles snow and ice on that open ground — long farm lanes, wide gravel yards, commercial lots that catch every bit of blow-across. Plowing out there is a question of sightlines and stacking: where the piles go so the next thaw does not run right back over the pavement. Salt and grit follow the blade, heaviest at the grades and the gate lines. There is a particular quiet on a big cleared lot at first light, before a single tire has marked it.
