White keeps its grain elevator as the tallest thing for miles, a landmark visible across the flat Brookings County ground long before the town's short grid of streets comes into view. Midwest Tree Service LLC clears driveways along those streets and the farm lanes running out from them, and when a heavy wet snow comes down hard enough to snap a limb off one of the shade trees planted along Main Street decades ago, the same crew is back out clearing the debris as soon as the storm passes. A prairie storm out here tends to arrive with enough wind that a plowed driveway needs checking again by midafternoon, drifted back in from an open field with nothing to slow the wind down before a fence line. Sidewalks around the elevator and the co-op get cleared early, since farm traffic doesn't wait for the residential streets to be done first. By the time the co-op's morning trucks are loading, the elevator's apron and the drive out to the scale are already bare down to the gravel.
