At noon in late July the brick along Kemp Avenue holds the heat, and a few blocks off it the shade trees of the old neighborhoods make the whole street ten degrees kinder. Watertown Lawn & Garden works those blocks — the narrow side yards, the boulevard strips between sidewalk and curb, the deep back lots that run all the way to the alley. The work is mowing on a dependable turn, trimming close along fence lines and foundation plantings, edging the walk so the grass stops where it should, and keeping the beds weeded and the turf fed through a summer that can swing from soaking storms to three dry weeks. In spring the crews open the year by clearing winter's leftovers; in fall they close it by taking the leaves down and out before the ground hardens. A yard on a shaded Watertown street, cut and cleaned up on a hot afternoon, is a small and completely real pleasure.
