Lake Pelican's cabin roads sit quiet most of the winter, but the handful of places still occupied year-round need their lanes open just the same, narrow gravel stretches that run close along the shoreline before cutting back toward the highway. Reuer Services keeps those lake-country drives clear through the season, working routes that see almost no other traffic between one plow pass and the next. The lake itself locks up early most years, and the cold that settles over its surface tends to slide down onto the cabin roads before it reaches town, meaning a Pelican-area drive can ice over hours before the forecast catches up. Between lake routes, the same crew handles residential drives back in Watertown proper, a shorter, more sheltered kind of work by comparison. Half the cabins along the shore sit dark and unplowed through January, but the ones still lived in get the same open lane every storm, whether or not another vehicle passes it between visits.
