Grosz Excavating works the farm approaches threading between those potholes, driveways that curve around a slough rather than running straight, each one holding snow a little differently depending on how close it sits to open water. A hard freeze out here can leave black ice exactly where a slough's edge meets the gravel, an unmarked hazard the crew learns to expect at the same handful of spots every winter. Back toward town, larger acreage lots get a full loader clear rather than a single pass, since the wetland wind can refill a narrow blade-width in under an hour. The ducks and geese that crowd these sloughs every fall are long gone by the time the ice sets in, leaving just the farms and the plow route behind.
