Late afternoon on the Uptown blocks, the sidewalk squares hold the day's heat and the boulevard grass has put on a half inch since Tuesday. Cutting Edge runs the route then — mower first, string trimmer around mailbox posts and fence lines, then the edger down the walks and drives until there is a clean groove between concrete and green. Blow the walk off, roll up, gone. The name is the promise: an edge you can see from the street, a line that says somebody was here and took it seriously. Grass in this country comes on fast in June and slows in August, and the route bends to that.
