Drive the Vanocker Canyon road toward Nemo in October and the aspens come in gold against the dark pine — a few weeks of it, then gone. Sturgis catches the tail end in leaf litter and shortening daylight, and a yard wants the year closed out properly before the ground hardens for good. Progressive Tree handles that end of the calendar: the last mowings taken low, leaves cleared off the turf, beds and fence lines emptied down to bare dirt. There is an evening late in the month when the final yard is finished in the blue half hour after sundown and the whole block looks put away for winter. That is the moment the work is for.
