Late in a Stickney winter the snow grows a crust, softening a little under the February sun and freezing hard again overnight until the drifts can hold a dog's weight. Tolsma Construction, a construction business, works through that snow in town, moving the heavy, layered pack that a shovel only bounces off. Approaches, driveways and lots are pushed back and opened so trucks and cars can get in and out. There is a builder's pleasure in it: ground made usable again, a level surface where an hour ago there stood a frozen ridge. When meltwater finally trickles along the gutters in March, those cleared spaces are the first to dry.
