Spearfish holds a strange little piece of weather history — a single January morning in 1943 when the temperature jumped roughly fifty degrees in about two minutes flat as a Chinook wind poured down off the canyon — and Page Etc has learned to work with exactly that kind of unpredictability rather than against it. The town sits right where Spearfish Canyon opens onto the plains, Spearfish Creek running cold and often unfrozen even in deep winter thanks to its spring-fed source up the canyon, and the crew's routes near Black Hills State University shift fast when a warm gust turns packed snow to slush by midafternoon. That means checking a cleared driveway twice in one day sometimes, once after the morning snowfall and again once meltwater refreezes after sunset along the shaded, canyon-facing sides of a house. Limestone canyon walls hold the cold on one side of a property and let a Chinook strip it away on the other, so Page Etc reads each address almost like its own small climate. It's a strange kind of weather to plan a business around, but nobody in Spearfish would want it any other way.
