On an August afternoon the thunderheads stack up white over the pine ridge above Summerset, and for an hour the whole slope of grass below goes a deep gold-green while everyone watches the sky to see what it will decide to do. Beds get their edges cut back by hand so the line between mulch and turf stays honest instead of blurring outward all summer. Yard cleanups pull out what the wind brings down, because the wind here brings down plenty. Grass on this eastern slope of the Hills lives on what it is given, so overseeding is timed to the shoulder of the season rather than the middle of it. The reward is a lawn that still looks intentional in late summer, when the prairie east of the interstate has long since gone to straw.
