Lewandowski Construction spends most of the year building on the farms scattered across the Coteau des Prairies outside Sisseton, and winter turns that same equipment toward the long gravel driveways those farms depend on — stretches from the section-line road up to the yard that a small plow truck would take all morning to clear. Up on the ridge, wind has a lot more room to work than it does down in the river valleys, and a farmstead can drift its own lane shut twice in the same day if the wind doesn't quit. The company runs loaders and blades built for moving dirt, which turns out to translate well to moving the deep, wind-packed drifts that pile against a machine shed or a grove of shelterbelt trees planted decades ago against exactly this problem. From the high ground here you can see for miles in every direction once a storm clears, fields and farmsteads laid out under a hard blue sky, and Lewandowski's trucks are usually still out in it, working the next driveway on the list. It's slower, heavier work than a suburban route, but out here that's simply what the ground and the wind require.
