By early November the river bend at Yankton Trail Park runs bare and grey, and the last cut of the year is a short one. Lawn and Snow Company makes that final pass across Sioux Falls lawns, taking the grass down and lifting the leaves so nothing smothers underneath. The months before it are mowing on rotation, trimming, edging and the fertilizing that builds a lawn worth mowing in the first place. Closing a yard out properly in autumn is its own sort of care — quiet, unshowy, and perfectly obvious come April. Then the grass rests, and the whole round waits to begin again.
