Crew Restoration & Construction spends most of the year putting buildings back together after wind and hail, so the outfit is used to reading a Sioux Falls sky for what it's about to do to a roofline or a parking structure. Winter turns that same attention toward the sprawling lots and ramps around the Sanford medical campus on the west side, where staff and patients need a clear path at every hour, storm or not. The crew runs plows and de-icer through the night, clearing lanes wide enough for ambulances and narrow enough to leave the landscaping beds along the campus drive intact for spring. It's less dramatic than storm restoration, but the logic is the same: get ahead of the damage a Dakota winter can do, whether that's a cracked shingle or an icy ramp somebody's counting on to get to work on time. When the lot opens clean under a low gray sky before the day shift arrives, the work has already happened and gone.
