East of Rapid City the land drops off the hogback ridge and flattens into open plains, and that's where the wind does the real damage in winter, scouring drifts across the road faster than any storm can drop new snow. Crow Peak Contractors starts its mornings watching that ridge line for the first gray light, because a clear plains sunrise after a windy night usually means drifts are piled deep against every east-facing garage door in town. The crew plows driveways down to pavement and cuts through drifts that have built up overnight along fence lines and property edges, then salts the driveway aprons where blown snow refreezes fast once the wind drops. Walkways get shoveled clear by hand in spots too tight for the blade. Snow that has nowhere left to go gets hauled off the property entirely. The route runs through Rapid City's eastern neighborhoods and out toward Rapid Valley and New Underwood, where the wind has the most open ground to work with.
