Canyon Lake holds a patch of open water through most of the winter, geese working the edges while the rest of the pond locks up white, and that patch is the first thing Buzz's crew checks on a cold morning because it means the temperature hasn't bottomed out yet. Rapid City's real deep-freeze mornings, the ones where every last inch of the lake goes solid, are also the ones where driveway snow turns to something closer to concrete overnight. Buzz's Lawn Care and Snow Removal plows those driveways early, before the sun is fully up over the park, and shovels the walks around it by hand where the blade would just scrape ice. Ice melt goes down on the shaded north sides of houses that hold their frost the longest into the morning. Snow gets hauled off a driveway's edge when there is nowhere left to hold it, leaving a clean rectangle of pavement against the white all around it. The crew's route circles Canyon Lake Park and reaches out toward Piedmont on the harder storm days.
