From Skyline Drive the ponderosa pines stand dark against a sky just starting to gray, and that ridge is the first place A & M Yardworks looks before a storm, watching which way the clouds are stacking over the Black Hills. Rapid City's streets climb straight uphill toward that timberline, so the west-side blocks near the ridge often carry twice the snow the flats east of town get from the same system. The crew clears driveways and shovels the porches and steps a plow blade can't reach, then spreads salt on the steep pull-outs that glaze first once the sun drops behind the pines. Snow gets pushed to the edge of the yard or hauled off when there's nowhere left to stack it. Yardwork through summer gives way to plow work by November, the same trucks covering Rapid City's west side along with Piedmont and Black Hawk closer to the timber.
