Platte Creek gives the town its name, its bottomland running cottonwood and box elder for a stretch before opening into Lake Francis Case a few miles on. Platte Tree & Lawn Care spends the growing season among those same creek-bottom trees and the windbreaks planted along area farmsteads, and once the first hard frost locks the creek's edges in ice, the crew shifts to clearing driveways and walks across town instead. Scraping a drive down to bare gravel while frost still rims the creek just past the last row of houses takes the same close attention the crew gave those trees all autumn, only now it's aimed at driveways instead of branches. Winter out here doesn't hide much — the tableland east of the lake is open enough that a plowed lot stays visible for a long way in every direction. The creek's iced over and the branches are bare for the year, and the crew keeps working those same acres with a plow blade now instead of pruning shears.
