LaFramboise Island sits in the Missouri River just off downtown Pierre, seven miles of cottonwood bottomland that Lewis and Clark camped on in 1806 and named, none too fondly, Bad Humored Island. Those same cottonwoods stand bare and heavy-limbed by the time the season's first real snow arrives, and Bixler Tree Services works the yards along that bottomland as readily as the streets up in town. Once autumn pruning wraps up and the branches are cut back for the year, the crew shifts from cutting limbs to cutting clean lines through fresh snow on driveways and walks. A driveway plowed dark and sharp-edged against a white yard, cottonwoods standing bare and still overhead, is its own small proof the work got done right. It keeps the crew working ground they already know all year, just with a different tool in hand once the leaves are gone.
