Around Pelican, in the lake country southwest of Watertown, white pelicans drift across Pelican Lake on summer mornings like scraps of cloud settled on the water. Z’s Straight Cut’z takes its own name literally on the lawns here: lines laid straight and true, edges cut clean where grass meets walk and drive. This is glacial country, rolling and green, and summer grass grows lush on the rich ground the ice left behind. A just-mown lawn catches the low morning sun in long stripes, and the breeze off the lake carries the sweetness of cut grass across the township. It is precise work, and in Pelican the result looks as calm as the water on a windless dawn.
