Everything in this country begins with the ground it stands on — the dark bottom soil along Whitewood Creek, the gumbo that holds a boot in April, the thin gravelly stuff up where the pines start. Earthworm Construction keeps lawns in North Lawrence, and the name suits how the work goes: patient, close to the dirt, mowing and trimming and hauling off whatever the season left behind. Spring here is a long argument between snow and green, and there is real satisfaction in the first cut of the year, when a yard stops looking like winter and starts looking like somebody's. Edges get squared, tight corners get reached, clippings get carried away. By the time the afternoon light comes sideways over the hills, the yard is finished and it shows.
