Nisland sits out on the high, dry rangeland north of the Black Hills, close enough to the hills that a warm wind can swing through in January and melt half a week's snow in an afternoon, then just as fast turn back to hard cold overnight. This crew works ranch approaches and the town's short run of residential streets both, timing the work around those swings rather than fighting them: clear early if a thaw is coming, clear late if the cold is due back before dark. The Belle Fourche River bottom nearby holds fog and frost longer than the open range above it, so driveways down near the water get a different read than ones up on the flat. Cattle operations out from town need a lane open no matter what the sky is doing, so the ranch routes get worked in whatever order the wind and the herd both demand. By evening, whether the day brought a thaw or a hard freeze, the same short list of driveways is checked clear.
