Lake Oahe stretches out flat and white past the edge of Mobridge most of the winter, and the properties closest to its frozen shoreline catch a wind with nothing left to slow it down before it reaches a driveway or a boat ramp. This crew works those lakeside yards through the season that used to be about mowing and planting, clearing paths down to docks that won't see a boat again until spring and driveways for houses built to look out at the water. Ice fishing traffic keeps a few of those access roads busier than a typical winter street, so they get checked more than once during a storm. A cleared path along the shoreline in January looks almost nothing like the same stretch of grass in July, but it gets the same close attention either way. By the coldest part of the season, this crew knows exactly which lakeside driveways the wind will fill in first.
