Out on the high plains of Bennett County, winter does not fall on Martin so much as blow across it, carrying snow sideways off the open grass until it heaps against fence lines and doorsteps all over town. Lacreek Development Corporation bears the Lacreek name, the same one the marsh country southeast of here goes by, where trumpeter swans keep to the refuge waters through the cold months, and its work here at home is snow removal. Clearing snow in Martin means reading the wind as much as the snowfall, knowing which side of a building fills first and cutting it back to bare ground. The reward is a morning with driveways open and walks clear, a car able to pull out under that enormous prairie sky.
