Madison lies in the low ground between Lake Herman and Lake Madison, and on a late-summer afternoon the wind comes off the water and moves through every yard in town on its way east. Madison Lawn and Landscape works that ground — shoreline lots where the grass runs down to the cabin steps, the flat blocks near the campus, the older streets where boulevard trees throw shade in ragged patches. Mowing gets set to the season: higher and more often through the humid stretch of July, lower and slower once the nights cool and lake fog starts showing up at sunrise. Edging is where a lawn stops looking mowed and starts looking finished, so the walks, the drive and the bed lines all get cut sharp. Leaves come off in the fall, the last pass goes down tight, and the yard heads into the cold looking squared away.
