Kohler Concrete has poured a fair share of the driveways and pads it now clears each winter around Lennox, work that runs in a loop from the Vermillion River bottomland east of town back through the grid of streets near the co-op. Knowing a driveway's slope and finish from having formed and floated it firsthand makes the winter pass simpler — where the water wants to run in spring is exactly where the ice forms first in January. The crew clears those same properties before frost gets a chance to bond overnight snow to the concrete underneath, a problem specific to a poured surface that a gravel drive rarely has. Lennox is small enough that a good share of its driveways carry the same handwriting in the concrete, and now the same crew keeps them open through the winter that follows.
