By October the cottonwoods along Dakota Avenue have started letting go, and the big pheasant on the south edge of town stands against a sky gone thin and pale. That is JS Mowing's favorite stretch of the year: the grass slows, the heat quits, and the work turns to cleanup — leaves off the lawn, a last low cut, the corners around the Campbell Park tables and the neighborhood fence lines run clean. Summer is the long grind, mowing week after week from May onward, and there is real satisfaction in a route held together through the heat. But fall is where a yard gets put to bed properly. Everything raked, everything trimmed, nothing left to mat down over the cold months.
