Even Construction spends most of the year framing new houses on Huron's growing edge, where the shelterbelts of cottonwood and cedar planted generations ago as windbreaks still do their job against a prairie gust. Come winter, the same crew turns those tools toward clearing the driveways and gravel pads on the lots they've built, working block by block through streets still short on mature shade and long on open wind. A new subdivision drifts differently than an established one — less to break the wind, more snow moving sideways instead of straight down — so the plow routes shift year to year as the trees the town keeps planting slowly catch up. Getting a fresh driveway clear before a homeowner's first winter in a new house matters in a place still filling itself in.
