Fog pools in the low ground along Elk Creek most winter mornings before the sun climbs high enough to burn it off the foothills, and Atk Landscaping is usually out working through it, headlights cutting a short cone ahead of the blade. Black Hawk's mix of creek-bottom yards and pine-covered slopes means no two driveways clear the same way — some hold snow in shaded pockets that never quite thaw, others sit exposed enough that the wind does half the work on its own. Reading which section of a yard needs the plow and which just needs a shovel along the walk is close to solving a small puzzle every single property, and getting it right leaves the whole place looking like it was never buried at all. As the fog lifts off the creek and the pines start throwing long shadows across cleared driveways, the finished work blends back into a morning that looks, for a while, almost like an ordinary fall day. It's quiet work in a quiet fold of the foothills, done well before most Black Hawk kids are even dressed for the bus.
