Big Stone City sits at the foot of Big Stone Lake, where the Minnesota River slips away to begin its long run southeast, and in winter that whole narrow reach of water turns to ice. A January wind crossing it gathers snow and delivers it into town sideways, packing drifts against garages and filling the low ends of driveways. Ronglien Excavating Inc meets that weather with snow removal, bringing an excavator's feel for grade and surface to the job. Drives are scraped down to solid footing, and the piles go where they will stay out of the way until thaw. Out on the lake the ice houses keep their vigil; here in town, cars are backing out onto bare pavement.
