Baltic's water tower holds the last daylight long after the streets below have gone gray, and this M & L Construction crew is often finishing its second pass of the evening right about when the light finally goes. It's a short grid of a town, easy to learn house by house — which driveways slope toward the garage, which pitch toward the street — and the blade gets adjusted for each one rather than run the same way down the whole block. South Dakota winter days are short enough that clearing by streetlight is just part of the job, headlights doing the work the low sun did back in October. A driveway finished by feel in the dark, blade angled just right on the last pass, holds its clean rectangle under streetlight the same as it would under noon sun. By the time the tower light blinks on for the night, the block is done and waiting on morning.
