The grain elevator is the tallest thing in Baltic, and its shadow falls clean across Main Street and the rail spur beside it most winter afternoons. M & L Construction works that end of town with equipment built for scale — the wide commercial lot behind the elevator, the loading apron where trucks still need room to turn, ground no shovel could touch in a season. Out past the tracks the fields run flat to the horizon, the same wind that empties them onto the road pushing right back at whatever gets cleared off it. Pushing a whole storm's worth of snow into a pile taller than the loader itself is plainspoken, unglamorous work, and this crew treats it that way. By the time the next truck needs to turn in, the gravel apron behind the elevator is bare again, no fuss about it.
