Aberdeen earned its old nickname, the Hub City, from rail lines that once converged here from nine different directions, and the grid of streets downtown still follows lines laid out around those tracks more than a century ago. B&B Contracting Inc works that downtown grid and the neighborhoods radiating off it, clearing driveways and lots on streets platted for wagons and freight, not for the width of a modern plow truck. Some of those older blocks run narrower than anything built since, which means a snowfall that would be routine out on the highway frontage can back up a whole street downtown until someone gets in there with the right equipment. This crew handles that mix of old and new, working tight alleys behind Main Street buildings as carefully as the wide-open lots on Aberdeen's newer edges. A city that grew up around freight lines still moves on its streets in winter, and this crew keeps enough of them open that it can.
