The first cut of the year on Wadmalaw lands sometime in March, once the winter weeds have gotten ambitious and the ground is finally dry enough to hold a mower without scarring. Riley & Son Lawn Care opens the season there and keeps rolling: weekly mowing, a defined border along drives and beds, trimming wherever a deck can't reach. Out on these lanes a lawn is fenced by woods on two sides and creek on a third, so half the job is holding a line against everything that would like to cross it. Held well, the result looks effortless, which is exactly the point. The truck works down the road one yard at a time, and the island tidies up behind it.
